Critique Paper 2

Writer: Dante McLeodDante McLeod

The website, https://stockx.com/, allows the selling and purchasing of products, from sneakers to electronics. Therefore, the audience of the website is those interested in buying and selling the offered products. In relation to the book, “Don’t Make Me Think, Revisited,” by Steve Krug, in chapter 11, “Usability as common courtesy,” the homepage of the website has 2 elements that diminish goodwill and 3 elements that increase goodwill.

The first element that diminishes goodwill is that the homepage of the website looks amateurish. The organization on it could stand to be better. There are rows of products that are scattered throughout the page. For example, a row can consist of shoes to sell or buy, then the row under it will have clothes, the one under that will have electronics, and then it’s back to a row of shoes. This takes place in the middle of the homepage. I would suggest that this page have the same products in the same areas. That way visitors can navigate it better. The next element on the homepage that diminishes goodwill is that it hides wanted information.

For this, the homepage hides contact information from its viewers. The only reference to contact information is a small link at the bottom of the page. From personal experience, the customer service on the website can be tricky. After purchasing sneakers from the website, when my package arrived, I received the wrong item. When I looked for contact information, I had to search it up in a different Google tab. Then, I was put into a chat box, but I feel that there needs to be a phone number for people to talk to representatives. However, the homepage does tell people wanted information.

This is the first way they increase goodwill. An example of this involves prices. In the middle of the homepage, it lists items that are included on the website that appear in white boxes. There are prices listed that show how much items cost. To see how much items, sell for, you have to click on the item to get to that page. The second thing the homepage does to increase goodwill is knowing the main things people want to do on the site and making them obvious and easy.

When I was told about stockx, it involved me trying to purchase a pair of sneakers. After going on the homepage, I saw some of the sneakers and all the other products they have to offer, including clothes, handbags and electronics. I can imagine that other visitors interested in this websites’ products have heard about the website from others or have probably found it on their own. Therefore, the homepage does a good job of displaying some products in their categories to entice viewers into doing business with stockx. The third and final thing the homepage does well is showing that it knows what questions you might have and answering them.

This goes back to the topic of items and prices mentioned earlier. When you want to do business on a website, one of the first things you look for is what it’s offering. As mentioned previously, the homepage on stockx clearly lists the products that they allow people to sell and buy. Another thing you’ll probably question is how much products cost. When it comes to buying products, prices are put right under them. Whether the website has more aspects that diminish or increase goodwill is yet to be seen.

While stockx’s homepage has good traits, there are still things that need improving. So, if the content creators take the chance to review their website, it would greatly benefit stockx’s business.
